whoa! it's been forever since i've written. i can't even remember when or what my last entry was...let's see...goodness. nearly three weeks ago. things have been busy since then. i've had the first decent xmas in concious memory, which is shocking, to say the least, and have also walked away with a loverly pile of booty including a digital camera from Mom and Dad, when all i wanted was a subscription to the New York Times. harumph. tell me, when I make it so painfully easy to shop for me, why oh why oh why do you make it so hard on yourself? and then you stress stress stress and make the whole holiday hard for yourself! goodness. not that i'm complaining. although i do think it very interesting that perhaps there is a little bit of growth here, since i think that last year and in years previous i was much more prone to letting stuff get to me. hmmm. well anyway. we flew to Kaua'i, in the lovely state of Hawai'i, for five days during the winter break. Kaua'i is an extraordinary island. i always enjoy being on a landmass of so much contrast. it's like, water, straight up to mountain, and straight back down again. i do love that extremity. we ate like pigs, derailing any training, and squabbled only a very little bit. it was a perfectly lovely time and enjoyed by all, except for the times during which posture and, ah, walking style were commented on. unfairly, i might add. i mean, god, i'm on vacation! must i sit like i have a sequoia tree rammed up my ass all the time? good gracious. sigh. other loot: the entire first season of Nip/Tuck, with which i am utterly and shamelessly obsessed, from jim, and also a book on The Long Way Round, a perfectly charming Bravo network show starring Ewan Macgregor and his best friend Charley as they ride the motorcycles around the world, which Jim and I were watching for a bit but didn't get to see much of. the wonderful person i live with also got me a new trainer for my bicycle, which made me very happy, because it's a lot quieter now and I can train without sounding like a vacuum cleaner on which the exhaust has blown. if vacuum cleaners had exhausts, i mean. we also got two great puppy-themed mugs from Lara and Roj, which are actually my first-ever puppy gifts geared towards the home. I mean, sure, I have puppy stuffed animals and all that, but this is a true move in the right direction! they came with a hand-made card from Jody and Lara, which was very exciting. i do love handmade cards. i didn't get around to doing my own this year, which is just plain sad. also had a nice book on hiking and a great laminated map from brother on which to map out next adventure. very good! i have my very first assignment! It's a big one, too--2800 words on universal design, which is an architectural and design movement that allows for an aging population...doors are widened, thresholds removed, vanities dropped lower, bathtubs accident-proofed, thermostats with bigger numbers, so on and so forth. very very exciting. a good magazine, too, with a very healthy readership and a pretty stellar requirement for backup materials, so as to eliminiate any mistakes. very good. very pleased to have made their acquaintance. new year's was stellar. we ended up going out to Sean and Joanne's to celebrate with them at a local restaurant, and see their new place, in Jersey City. we were very happy to see them and spend a nice long block of time with them. we went mountain biking in ridiculous 60-degree weather the next day, hangovers and all, and in general had a blast. sigh. i do hope that everyone's holiday was as good as mine. other than that, i've burned two pans and scorched a bag of popcorn this year already. hope people are having more luck in the kitchen than i am.
